If choosing between the two, I'd probably go with JA2, but much depends on taste, setting preference, etc. My dream game would be some sort of merging of the SS2 and JA2 engines - the tactical realism of JA2 with the three-dimensionality and destruction of SS2.Īnyway, I highly recommend both games if you're at all into this sort of thing.

It was a nice sort of "revenge" to simply shoot similar watchtowers up with machine guns and destroy them in SS2.) (Though there are a few too many irritating snipers with night-vision goggles on watchtowers for my taste. It increases the realism a bit (and ditches the SF subplots altogether) and has a few nice enhancements and such, while not being *too* unplayably hardcore.

And in at least one mission, it's actually quite difficult to keep vertical paths intact.įor JA2, I think I like the "Jagged Alliance 2: Wildfire" variant best. any sort of grenade or explosive will operate buggily.) But there's a bit less (but still some) of the "Guy with one hit point remaining leaps up and fired five perfectly aimed machine gun bursts while turning cartwheels, after taking two head shots from a sniper rifle" stuff, and suppression fire is useful, while nonexistent in SS2.Īnother bit of buggishness that annoys is how everything's destructible - but the Panzerkleins can only go up or down if there are intact stairs around. JA2 actually seems to have a pretty solid engine as far as real-life tactics go, but it's a lot more "two dimensional," and has an annoying bug persisting across all variants that basically makes it impossible to hit someone on a rooftop with anything other than a bullet (e.g. I understand in the "Sentinels" add-on that they've fixed a lot of this stuff, but it's not available in the U.S. Seems to make it more playable, but they're still formidable.) Some serious bugs in skill advancement that basically make engineers completely useless, which is annoying but I've discovered from people here that you can get through the game well enough without an engineer. I'm using a mod, though, that makes the Panzerklein suits more mobile, but more vulnerable. The SF elements of the story become too predominant near the end, but they're kinda fun too. I love the destructibility, but it does encourage some questionable tactics. I like it a lot, but, yeah, it's got some flaws. It still might be worth looking into, and I've heard the sequal toned town power armor a lot.īig fan of the Jagged Alliance 2 games, and I'm playing Silent Storm myself now. On the other hand, I did have a lot of fun for the first part of the game, pre-power-armor and when the destructable terrain was still new and cool. I'm all for destructable terrain and it makes perfect sense to shoot through wooden doors and that sort of stuff, but the terrain was a little too destructable some times. (which may be why the above poster found it so hard) The best solution generally is to use machineguns to rip apart the building you're suppose to clear at a distance, then snipe and throw grenades through holes in the walls. On occasion, though, it will decide not to let you save when there are no enemies visible or about to attack you, which can lead to long boring room-by-room searches in turn based mode.Īnother thing I disliked about it is that in CQ situations playing it like a proper tactical shooter is a good way to get slaughtered. That's fine in my book, since I never liked the "save every turn" lameness you can get away with in most similiar games. Also, and I think this was only on higher difficulties, you can't save with enemies around. The skill system kind of sucks and the power armor kind of both broke the atmosphere and made the gameplay much less enjoyable.
